I am NOT being generous by giving it 5s in all categories. I've been to 6 different Thai restaurants in San Francisco and Thai Chef in Chinatown surpasses the rest. (Don't assume that the other Thai Chef locations will measure up though because the one on Irving is just a little better than King of Thai Noodle, which isn't very good at all.) Making the journey from Downtown SF to Chinatown to eat there is totally worth it and I know because I've tried the Thai restaurants Downtown as well. The service here is great--the waiters/waitresses are very friendly. I've had my share of experiences with horrible and rude waitresses at other Thai restaurants so the fact that this Thai Chef has such kind waiters is a HUGE plus for me. The atmosphere is great as well; they play tasteful Thai music and the light purple walls with dim lights give the restaurant a relaxed and almost intimate feel. Not to mention I love the emo/retro-ish art on the walls. The food is fantastic. Not the best Thai iced tea but everything else makes up for it. And do not forget to try the Thai tea ice cream. Fantabulous. The food is also inexpensive. Vegetarian friendly--I should know, I am one. Highly recommended.
