We went here to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, which I told them in advance. They did nothing special to acknowledge this. The service was awful, and my husband had to get up and ask the maitre'd for fresh ground pepper on our salads. You would have thought that would have given them a clue to be more attentive. We had to ask for more butter, water and bread. Dirty martini was good as was double vodka rocks. Salads were mediocre, as were our steak entrees (steaks were not cooked properly). When we ordered dessert, they didn't acknowledge our anniversary. Also didn't ask if we wanted coffee. What REALLY irked us was the 17% automatic service fee they charge for the privilege of letting us sit on their naughahide booths and using their plates and eating utensils. Oh, yes, they do give the staff 40-50% of the 17%...how generous of them. We didn't feel the service was worth 17%, so my husband left only 10% which posed a problem for the snotty maitre'd who informed my husband that they would change the amount on the bill that he had already signed and submit it to our credit card company for payment. Needless to say we will contest the charge. So, they won the battle, but lost the war. As a native San Franciscan I will NEVER set foot in that establishment again, not will I EVER recommend it to anyone. My Mother's family owned Alfred's in the late 1930's and early 1940's when they entertained famous opera stars like Enrico Caruso, and I can guarantee you that they would have never treated customers the way we were treated last Thursday night. As far as I am concerned, Alfred's should shut their doors and never open them again.

My sister and her husband took me to Alfred's last summer not knowing what to expect but we were hopeful for a great steak and complete dinner experience. I wanted it all, great food, great atmosphere and great service. Believe it or not, we got it all! I went there over 10 months ago and haven't stopped raving. The flavor of the steak was the best I have ever had. I am from Oregon and have been planning a return trip to SF just to be able to go to Alfred's.

For a restaurant established in 1926.. Alfred's was the most dissapointing dinner experience ever.. Reservations made well in advance inquired will the "Special Menu" still be available..Of course replied Vic on the phone.. We arrived at 930pm for a 10pm. Reservation..Greeted at the desk and asked to wait in the "Bar" ..Where we met other guests grumbling about the wait ? An 8 and 830pm guests still waiting and it's 930pm..This should have been the Que to leave.. Finally seated at 11pm..The Pre-fix Menu was out..Your choices were nill and the service was non existence..We asked for Ceaser and received tossed Greens..Our Meal was served cold and the baked potato was subed for mashed.. A disaster and the excuses were just blatant point the finger on the early customers for the late seating the Kitchen for lack of Help... Will not Return to this establishment and definitley not Reccommend it... Our Family Remembers when it was on the Top of Broadway.. Those were the Days....

We went here for dinner on New Years Eve. We showed up at 9:30pm for our 10:00pm reservation and were finally seated at 11:10pm. As we waited to be seated the host of Alfred's continually blamed the guests for taking too long to eat instead of acknowledging that they overbooked for the evening and had insufficient staff at hand. The host even went as far to say that another table had waited an hour and ten minutes to be seated and that he knows he wouldn't have waited that long to eat there. After our table was set up it sat vacant for 10 minutes. We were then seated and sat at the table waiting to be acknowledged for 20 minutes. Numerous waiters passed our table during the 20 minutes we sat and not one waiter said hello or filled our water glasses. At this point we decided to leave rather than order anything and wait hours for the food to come. I let the host know that we were leaving and to give our table to someone else as the line of people waiting to eat was now out the door. Overall this was by far our worst experience dining out and a shining example of poor management and bad service. For the host to blame the customers for taking too long to eat is not only a cop-out but disrespectful to the very people who keep their doors open. After reading some of the previous reviews it is clear that this is an ongoing issue with the Alfred's on a day to day basis. Honestly, it deserves no stars but this wasn't an option so it has one... **Note: Guests leaving the restaurant also said that the food was subpar**

The steak was full of fibers and not cooked to taste. Asked for medium and got well done. When questioning waiter was rude. The maitre d, and owner, told me that I was there for a free dinner when all I was requesting was to have steak removed from bill or given something different from menu. Ratings overall is poor. Would not recommend.

I have been to many steakhouses and Alfreds in what it's all about. Giant cuts of dry aged steak and the bar is stocked with some of the most amazing single malt scotches. Jason the bartender is great at making giant martinis and Louis our server was very good. I recommend Alfreds to anyone who loves good steak, tasty drinks, and a great atmosphere.

Been doing this place since Broadway. It's worth the trip from Hawaii to see great people and have a great Steak.
