Stumbled into this little sushi place on a recent trip to San Francisco from New York. It was so good we went twice in the space of 4 days. Family run and small so reserve or be willing to wait on weekends. After experiencing most of the top sushi restaurants in New York I can say this place beats places like Nobu, Sushi of Gari and Sushi Seki hands down, upside down, hands tied behind your back. Not only is it friendly and unpretentious, its the best fish i've ever tasted and I still dream about it, especially the yellow tail and uni. One more thing, our bill at the end of the night was less than any sushi restaurant we have ever visited. Heaven!

I just moved to San Francisco from New York and was very pleasantly surprised to discover that the first sushi place I tried, which was also the closest to my new apartment, was some of the best I'd ever had. If you like hole-in-the-wall type places that aren't pretentious or fancy, and just give you really fresh sushi for a good value, then Atami is a great pick. Terrific fresh fish, both basic and innovative rolls, good service, a nice atmosphere, and affordable prices.
