Basil - a nice retreat from the ordinary
I love Thai food and expected to have a great choice of Thia food when I moved to SF in 2005. Then I started to look for one... I asked the locals, I reviewed the reviews and took a chance again and again; but nothing that wowed me. Then I went to the Folsom Street Fair in September with some friends and others told us to try Basil, which was a few blocks away. We went from one of the wildest events in SF to one of the most underrated restaurants. The atmosphere was simple, yet warm. Busy yet calm and cheap yet delicious. Even during one of the busiest events in Folsom Street, our wait was non-existant and our service was understated but attentive. And the food, well, it was the freshest, cleanest flavors I have tasted with any Thai food. Every bite was a tasteful morsal. My friends also said wow many times. There was not one thing that any of us did not think was well above the price. By the time we were done, each person paid less than $25 out their pocket and it was the truly best Thai food I have had in SF. Folsom Street is not a destination, unless it's September, but it is worth the trip... truly one of the best places to eat in San Francisco, period.

Fresh, Unique Thai Food
This restaurant does some really interesting things with more familiar dishes and does it really well. Especially try the salmon curry entree and the indian flat bread appetizer.
