Never again
This chef clearly believes he is something he is not. I found the whole restaurant to be pretentious and cold. Nicely presented food and creative wine list makes this place fair. I recommend other restaurants to dine in San Francisco and avoid feeling like a sucker after you leave benu. Eat here and you will be just another Corey lee groupie fawning after a chef who is not a big star chef but just a small man.

when less isn't more
I'll try to be objective. We were seated in a cool (read cold) greige side room reminiscent of a large storage closet. The menu seemed thoroughly appealing. The presentation was minimalist but regrettably so was the food. A quenelle was rubbery, a companion's fish over cooked and what is the charm in under seasoned food if it is not uniquely flavorful of itself. One entree among the three was acceptable for a lauded chef but hardly stellar. There seems to be no natural hospitality about the place rather a hushed reverence for the "art" being presented. Frankly the emperor seems to be scantily clad.
