A Blast from the Past
This is an old San Francisco restaurant that has managed to retain it's old school charm. Back in the day, these types of restaurants could be found all over San Francisco, particularly in the North Beach area. Unfortunately, times change and many of these places gave way to a lot of yuppie restaurants that claim to offer good Italian food but in reality do not even know what real Italian food is supposed to taste like. Unfortunately, Capps isn't as good as it once was (what is?) but still manages to hold its own. They serve dinner family style and we're happy to report the soup, salad and fish we ordered were quite good. We were disappointed not to find sourdough bread in our basket, however, and the house pasta served with a pomodoro sauce left something to be desired. And what's with this pomodoro sauce anyway? How about putting some good old-fashioned Italian gravy on that pasta, guys? You know...like the old days? We'll come down there and show you how to make one if you want us to. The spumoni ice cream was excellent but a couple more dessert choices would have been even better--tiramisu, a cannoli, cheesecake, etc. They make a good cup of coffee at Capps but don't ask for decaf. We did and were told "no decaf." Interesting. Nevertheless, the service was great (maybe due in part to it being a weeknight) and the waitstaff were super-friendly and helped make the experience a good one. This would be a fun restaurant to go to with a group of friends, order a bottle of Chianti and sing "That's Amore." Try it sometime. The worst that could happen is that you'd get kicked out, right? Ciao!
