Fina's my FAVORITE
Hands down, Fina is my favorite restaurant in the city. Before you've ordered a thing they serve you some bread with three little pots of hominy, mojo de ajo, and some spicy red chili sauce, all of which are super tasty. The bread is un-warmed, generic French, but you're better off saving the room and the sauces to use on their fantastic menu. I haven't had a dish there that I wouldn't recommend. Their salad dressing is a red onion-y vinaigrette that is hands down my favorite ever. I almost always take some home and have even flown some down to my parents. Their Spanish tortilla is as good as they come, especially topped with the mojo or red sauce. I usually get the Bistec a la Parilla and spend a minute just inhaling its amazing smell. I'm compelled to order it every time, but my husband is more flexible and has loved everything he's had from their decent selection of seafood dishes and fried egg-topped steak dishes. They succumbed to the (crazy) expectation that they serve Mexican food a couple years ago and started offering your standard taco-rice-refried bean combo plate fare, but I'll never waste my time ordering off that part of the menu. You should definitely go to the Van Ness location, and not the Mission one. The Mission restaurant is cramped, dank, and only has a partial menu. While the "Cancun nightclub" atmosphere (they accommodate parties and dancing with lights and a big central bar) is an eyesore, your senses will be too busy with the amazing food to be offended. Don't be deterred if it's deserted (husband and I are often the only patrons, but then we eat early) restaurants are like church to me, and I always worship at Fina Estampa's.
