The Buffet is Gone?
I see that a reviewer (from last fall) said that Helmand is still offering the lunch buffet. Well, I've called the resturant on several occasions to confirm this and they told me that the buffet has been discontinued and all meals are now from the menu. Really a sad thing I'll miss that great buffet and the reality is that the resturant (and this doesn't detract from the quality of the food) seems a little pricy now. The buffet was a great draw and introduced many who would have returned for dinnerI think they've made a mistake.

The Helmand is now Helmand Palace
Just a note to let people know that The Helmand reopened on Oct. 1, 2007 at 2424 Van Ness Ave. with a new name, Helmand Palace. They still offer the same Mon-Thur lunch buffet for $10. I'm sure that lots of folks will be happy that they are back.

Info on Helmand
Hello all, I have been a fan of Helmand for over 12 years. I have felt that their buffet was very good both in food and price values. About a year ago the hill behind the restaurant gave way and took out part of the building. Helmand has been closed since then. If you call their phone number, you will receive a message that their building is under repair and remodeling. I periodically check and that is the message that continues to be given. Waiting for them to reopen, :-( Richard

One of the best in San Francisco
This is consistently one of the best restaurants in the city. The cuisine is excellent, the ambiance quiet (a rarity in this city), and the service very good. My family and friends all love this place.

Total disagreement with other poster
Helmand has always been a bargain. Prices have gone up, but not much. One of my favorite rack of lamb dishes in SF, delicious pumpkin and aushak. Definitely a value place.

Pretentious, Average food, high prices
The food was unremarkable, in fact I would rate it as sub-par for such a pretentious restaurant. I asked for a leek boloni and they could only offer a pre-cooked potato boloni. Lamb portions were quite small. Unpalatable at these prices!
