Superb Classic Restaurant
A one of a kind Classic restaurant with great service, excellent food (try the steaks), fantastic cocktails, and a well balanced wine list. You get all this in a beautiful Sam Spade's setting. My wife really loves the place. Can't wait to take my friends for dinner.

Simply Great
Had dinner at John's Grill last night and it was fabulous. My guest and I started off with the Lobster Ravioli and it was enough for four. We shared a John's Steak which was a bone-in New York. The wine list was decent and priced right. Our server was very gracious and split everything for us. The atmosphere is so classic. Trendy restaurants can in no way compare to the traditional style that will never go out of style. We will be back to this gem of a spot.

What a Classic Find
We had dinner here during the All Stars games week. We enjoyed the generous martini's and portion size paired with the quality of our Porterhouse steaks. Our server was fabulous and the atmosphere was so unique to the city. We will be back.

Absolutely
This place was a kick, food and fun. I have had a VERY slightly better steak in Chicago, I have NEVER had better service. Our waitress was a hoot and was there so often I thought she was eating with us. I took my two teenagers out to dinner and got a serious thanks from them both. This is historic territory, the Flood Bldg behind and Union Square just up the hill, Macy's across the street. It was a great place and in a great place. This restaurant hasn't seen the end of me. Good enough for Sam Spade, it's certainly good enough for the rest of us.

What A Great Institution
We dined here last night and enjoyed our steaks, wine, service and above all atmosphere. My guest and I both had the John's steak ; very tender and good quality. We experimented ordering a bottle of Earthquake Syrah that was fabulous. The environment and setting was to die for. Since we are both in our late 20's we thought this was so cool because we had heard of what restaurants were like from our grandparents day. This place has been in existence for almost 100 years. We will be back.

Disappointing Dinner
On the way to the theater tonight, we decided to pop in to John's Grill for a light dinner. Needless to say, we were unimpressed. The atmosphere was okay but nothing to brag about. For example, the chairs at our table didn't even match each other--which is no catastrophe--but one of them actually had a torn seat...very tacky for a supposedly good dinner house. Our table was too close to our neighbors' table and there was barely room for two dinner plates, our bread plates and our wine glasses. The food we ordered from a limited menu was mediocre at best--I could have prepared a better meal in my own kitchen--and the service was only fair. The waiter also forgot to place our drink order. We did enjoy the house special cocktail, however, so our recommendation would be to consider John's Grill a good place to stop for a drink but not for a meal.

Inconsistent
I ate here two nights in a row. The first meal I had was the seafood canelloni which was awesome and the prawn cocktail with a house wine. The Prawns were not fully cleaned and were not large enough to qualify as prawns in my opinion. The second night I had a Filet steak with creamed spinach and a baked potato. The spinich was watery, the steak was not seasoned one iota and the steak though cooked medium was not the most tender. My sister had the ribeye which was better than the tenderloin but I was very unimpressed with the second meal. The atmosphere was homey and the host was very nice and welcoming. All in all I would probably eat there again, I just won't get the steak.
