    Vegetarian Plate

It was my first time there and I chose takeout. Their menu says their combo vegetarian platter comes with its set 3 items. I called in to see if I would be able to choose a different 3 items - if not, i would choose a meat platter. On the phone I was told I could have my choice of the veggies in the combo. GREAT! Picked up the food and went home...only to discover that they had given me the set vegetarian combo with two tiny scoops of my other choices as if an add on as an afterthought. I guess you can say I got an even larger variety, but the items on the set combo were the last things i'd choose to eat, unfortunately. The injera was also too sour. I do like tart injera over the nontart ones, but this one was just too sour and didn't work well with balancing the flavors of the vegetables. Now, I don't know if this was just a fluke, but I was disappointed.

Great Ethiopian Food in the Upper Haight

Great food, reasonably priced ($$), good atmosphere. The food is awesome; I would recommend either variety of the chicken, and the mushrooms beat Axum by leaps and bounds. Definitely get a sambusa; they have veggie and ground beef and are to die for. The Injera is always spongy, and every dish has met my approval. They also have a decent selection of Eritrean Beer to complete the experience. All food is reasonably priced. Most entrees hover around nine dollars, with a couple in the ten-plus range. The atmosphere is pleasant. They have pictures commemorating Eritrea on the walls, bamboo curtains seperating booths, and a friendly staff of mostly Eritreans. A good date place, or a good adventure into African foods, Massawa makes my list.
