Coffee Selections

Signature Blends

Per Lb. Each Blend Is A Masterful Combination Of Carefully Chosen Coffees From Each Year's Harvest. Combined To Bring Out Their Most Flavorful Characteristics

Arabian Mocha-Java the world's most famous coffee blend; full-bodied, bittersweet chocolate overtones enhance mocha-java's rich, complex flavors. mocha-java is the world's most famous coffee blend. when someone first thought of combining these two origins, it was before coffee was widely grown around the world. these two coffees were undoubtedly much different from those which the countries of yemen and indonesia produce today, although yemen still produces its coffee under very primitive conditions. as with any blend everything depends on the quality of the coffees used, and in this case the result is a delicious full-bodied coffee with bittersweet chocolate overtones on top of rich and complex flavors. while americans associate the word mocha with chocolate, they've reversed the facts: when cocoa was first refined and sold in europe, it reminded people of mocha coffee from yemen   16.95
Blend 101 medium-bodied, sparkling acidity, spicy notes. a complex coffee blended with strictly high-grown coffees from latin america. we use a blend of latin america's best quality coffees for 101. the high altitudes at which these coffees are grown give the blend a sparkling acidity that brings out the flavors inherent in top-quality, high-grown coffee. blend 101 is a little more full-bodied than house blend and a little more complex. it is a favorite of those who like the spicy flavor qualities of latin american coffee wrapped in the ethereal qualities that very high altitudes can produce   14.50
Café Domingo a smooth, balanced and medium-bodied latin american blend with hints of toffee sweetness and a clean, crisp finish. please note that café domingo is only available to ship on wednesdays. café domingo medium roast is named after our third café on domingo avenue in berkeley, california, opened by our founder, alfred peet in 1980. for decades, our regulars have gathered here for hand-crafted drinks and the camaraderie they conjure. our coffee experts carefully crafted this blend from three latin america coffees and fine-tuned the roast for the perfect medium-bodied cup.   13.95
Café Solano a lively and aromatic medium roast coffee. perfectly rounded with floral notes and a subtle fruit essence. please note that café solano is only available to ship on wednesdays. café solano medium roast coffee is named after our beloved café established in 1990 on solano avenue in berkeley, california. it's a place where our regulars come for their morning ritual of coffee and conversation. our "peetniks" expect the world from us, and with those high standards in mind, we created a world blend. we married vibrant and aromatic beans from africa, the americas and the indo-pacific in a medium roast for a lively yet perfectly rounded cup.   13.95
Espresso Forte everything we love in an espresso: stout body and thick, creamy consistency enveloping a tangy core of pure coffee essence. espresso forte is the first blend we created specifically with espresso in mind, with flavors that are abundant, bold, and robust. its name connotes both strength and its special aptitude for the most demanding method of preparation. espresso forte strikes the right balance between the earthy satisfaction of indonesia and papua coffee and the brightness and spiciness that are characteristic of the americas. while it reveals its best attributes using traditional espresso preparation methods, it also makes a good cup from a press pot or cone filter.   15.95
Fair Trade Blend fair trade blend has the distinctive tang and clean character of central american coffees smoothed by fuller-bodied coffees from chapters in indonesia, then pointed up and finished in the peet’s roast. six hundred families, none farming more than a few acres, operate a mill we know well in tarrazú, one of the best places in costa rica to grow coffee, and certainly the steepest. when this cooperative, which was producing to our standards more than a decade ago, became a fair trade affiliate, we made this clear-toned, lemony coffee the heart of the blend whose soul is assistance for small growers. we also purchase fair trade certified coffee from co-ops in nicaragua and guatemala. in addition to the price designed by fair trade to deliver a livable wage to its members, peet’s pays a premium to all of our suppliers for producing coffees of superior flavor, as well as ten cents from every pound to the non-profit group transfair usa for promoting fair trade. for many of our customers, this makes our unique fair trade blend taste sweeter still.   15.95
Gaia Organic Blend vibrant, juicy and complex. this coffee is a lively blend of certified organic coffees from central america, east africa and the pacific. every year more certified coffee becomes available. of course, certification does not guarantee cup quality. in gaia organic blend, we have created a coffee amenable to palate and planet. this blend follows the cycle of the seasons, incorporating exceptional crops of certified organic coffee as they are harvested throughout the year. these changes are subtle, but a gaia aficionado might note in the new year the sweetening influence of a new crop from colombia, followed in the spring by a lively infusion of costa rica, guatemala, or ethiopia, and in later months the renewed vigor and balance of beans from timor or papua new guinea. in every season the result is a coffee we are proud to offer, and coupled with our unique roasting style we believe it’s the best certified organic coffee available   15.95
Garuda Blend a full-bodied blend of coffees from the indonesian islands; nutty, aromatic, and slightly earthy. garuda blend is one of our first blends, created by alfred peet. this blend is crafted from superb coffees originating from indonesia and papua new guinea. each coffee has distinctly different flavor characteristics—the result of unique approaches to coffee production on the various islands in the archipelago. some of the coffees are produced in the semi-washed or wet hulled method, providing full body and nutty, earthy flavors; other coffees are fully washed, bringing acidity and a more refined flavor to the blend—culminating in a big, satisfying cup. garuda blend is named for the great bird that carries the hindu god vishnu, guardian of the world.   14.95
House Blend a perennial customer favorite. house blend combines the lively, well-balanced flavors of latin american coffees for a medium body and pleasant, satisfying taste. house blend is a perfect introduction to peet's coffees. also available in decaf.   12.50
Major Dickason's Blend our most famous blend. combines the best coffees from the world's premier coffee-growing regions. very full-bodied, complex, rich, and smooth. a coffee born of friendship, this full-bodied, complex blend was the combined effort of key dickason, a retired army officer and a regular at our original berkeley store, and alfred peet, our founder. together they sampled combinations of coffees until they arrived at what is now one of our most popular blends. of course we named it after our friend - and promoted him to major in the process. this is the coffee that many of our customers identify with peet's. over the years it has gained a reputation among coffee lovers for its satisfying, rich and mellow (some say comforting) flavor qualities. the blend's components contribute their regional characteristics but are balanced to make a well-rounded cup that is complex yet smooth. we always use the best coffees from each origin for this premier blend, so the customers who order "a pound of major" won't be disappointed. it produces a first-rate cup in a french press, not to mention an exquisite espresso.   14.95
Uzuri African Blend uzuri african blend represents a journey of small scale farmers improving their lives through coffee quality, culminating in a malty sweet east african blend with a medley of dark berry notes.   14.95

Dark Roasts $14.50

Per Lb. With Peet's Dark Roasts, The Coffees Are Roasted To Emphasize The Smoky, Toasty Flavors Of The Roast Itself

French Roast our darkest roast. an intense, bold coffee with pronounced smoky overtones. we blend only high-grown, hard-bean coffees that are dense enough to stand up to this roast. it is not a coffee for the cautious. the deep, dark glistening beans brew a bold cup of coffee with pronounced smoky overtones. in the united states, the name "french roast" usually denotes a very dark roast. peet's french roast delivers on the promise and more. with high-grown, top-quality arabicas, the result is a complex, intense cup of coffee.
Italian Roast intense; blended from the fullest-bodied, most flavorful coffees from the pacific and latin america. the italian roast is darker than our normal roast and consequently develops an intense, full-bodied flavor from the blend of pacific and latin american origins. the aroma is balanced and complex, and the beans glisten with natural oils. the name "italian roast" comes from the dark roasting style that is common in southern italy (coffees in northern italy are usually a bit lighter). the dark roast may have resulted from trying to obscure off-flavors in cheap coffee, but our approach to this roast starts with high altitude, full-bodied coffees. italian roast is one of the coffees we recommend for espresso.

Major Dickason's Blend - Decaf a decaf version of our most beloved blend. made of some of the finest coffees in the world, for a full-bodied, bright, bold and flavorful cup. also available in   15.95
Sumatra - Decaf one of our most popular coffees. full-bodied, herbal, nutty and complex. also available in regular. the regular version of sumatra is one of our most popular coffees because of its full body and rich flavor. the same could be said for the decaffeinated version, since we use the same coffee for both. sumatra's flavors are so deep and complex that they withstand better than any other coffee the slight flavor loss that decaffeination causes. all of the herbal, nutty nuances are retained, and the cup is one that most people would be hard-pressed to identify as decaffeinated. this is one of two decaffeinated coffees we brew as espresso in our retail stores.   15.95

Decaffeinated

Per Lb. These Coffees Are Favored By Those Who Want A Coffee With Rich, Deep Flavor Without All The Caffeine

French Roast - Decaf coffees from latin america dark-roasted for the fullest, deepest body and smoky flavors. also available in regular. the characteristic dark and smoky flavors of french roast are developed by roasting a blend of decaffeinated latin american coffees a little hotter and longer than our regular roast. high-quality beans are needed to withstand both the effects of decaffeination and the darkness of the roast. this coffee is well-liked by those who want a rich, dark flavor without all the caffeine   15.95
House Blend - Decaf lively and flavorful, it's peet's house blend without all the caffeine. also available in regular. decaffeinated house blend is lively and flavorful, and because it's roasted in peet's unique style, it offers considerably more body and aromatic complexity than one usually finds in a decaffeinated blend.   13.95
Major Dickason's Blend - Decaf a decaf version of our most beloved blend. made of some of the finest coffees in the world, for a full-bodied, bright, bold and flavorful cup. also available in regular. major dickason's is our most beloved blend. born in the earliest days of peet's, it's the result of collaboration between a customer – a local gourmand and coffee aficionado –and alfred peet. key dickason was a customer at our original vine street store. one day he brought in a blend idea, which intrigued mr. peet, who refined the blend, adding two further coffees to its original form. alfred peet named the blend in honor of his friend, promoting the retired army sergeant to major in the process. there is no other coffee that so perfectly epitomizes peet's: the full, rich taste, the complex tapestry of flavors in perfect harmony, the distinctive deep roast. for decaf major dickason's, we set out to blend the finest cup of decaf you can drink. we used the same premium coffees as the original for a decaf that is full of flavor, body and aroma, with a mellow, satisfying richness. the resulting coffee stands alone among decafs, brewed in press, drip or as a delicious espresso. it's our boldest decaf yet – and we think "major d" would be proud. .   15.95
Mocca-Java - Decaf complex and full-bodied. a blend of java and ethiopian mocca. this water-decaffeinated coffee is a blend of java and ethiopian mocca. it's a good choice for people who like the water-treated method but who want an added dimension in their coffee. the mocca in this blend is from ethiopia, hence the difference in spelling from arabian mocha java, which contains a mocha coffee from yemen.   16.95

Blend 101 medium-bodied, sparkling acidity, spicy notes. a complex coffee blended with strictly high-grown coffees from latin america. we use a blend of latin america's best quality coffees for 101. the high altitudes at which these coffees are grown give the blend a sparkling acidity that brings out the flavors inherent in top-quality, high-grown coffee. blend 101 is a little more full-bodied than house blend and a little more complex. it is a favorite of those who like the spicy flavor qualities of latin american coffee wrapped in the ethereal qualities that very high altitudes can produce  (per lb) 14.50
Costa Rica full-bodied coffee with a deep, pungent flavor, excellent acidity, and a hint of smokiness. costa rica produces excellent coffee. peet’s likes the coffee produced in the poas region near san jose, and our costa rica is a true regional coffee. it’s grown on a single estate, owned by a family of famers whose friendship with peet’s extends back many years. the finest beans are selected from doka to produce our single-origin costa rica. it’s full-bodied with the noticeable acidity typical of the best high-grown central american coffees. the flavor is deep and pungent with a hint of smokiness lying just below the surface.  (per lb) 13.50
Ethiopian Fancy medium-bodied coffee that is tangy and pungent with a lingering floral, almost perfumy aroma. ethiopian coffee can be described as medium-bodied and full of flavor. from good lots, you get a tangy, pungent brew with a lingering floral-almost perfumy-aroma. the floral aromatic characteristics are easily noted in the freshly ground coffee as well. we favor the coffee from yirga chefé in sidamo state, east of lake abaya. peet’s ethiopian fancy is a classically prepared, washed arabica. first, the perfectly ripe cherry is selected and sorted to eliminate any potential defects. it is pulped that same day so the bean emerges from the fruit unharmed: no nicks, cuts, rotting or other damage. after just the right period of fermentation allows the fruit to loosen from the seed, the coffee is thoroughly washed in high mountain waters. squeaky clean, it is transferred to raised drying beds to protect it from any possible ground contamination. there, farmers rotate it methodically and frequently lest it become sun-scorched - a gentle, uniform drying that allows all its inherent specialty to emerge. in short, everything is done to enable this coffee’s unparalleled and unique flavor to shine. the result is crystalline clear in its flavor delivery, pierced through with distinct citric notes (think lemons), and topped with a fancy floral note of jasmine blossoms – all in all, an incredibly distinct and fancy flavor experience  (per lb) 15.95
Kenya Auction Lot mellow, balanced acidity with sublime overtones of berries and citrus fruits. for more than 20 years, peet's has bought coffee directly from the kenya auctions. the auctions are a unique system with coffee sold lot by lot to the highest bidder. this is the ultimate meritocracy for coffee, with choice lots reaching the highest prices. our long experience is unparalleled – and we're unusual in our practice of buying only single lots direct from the auction, rather than a stock blend made up of coffees of varying quality. for a few weeks in march and april, when the crop is at its seasonal best and the pick of top-grade lots come to auction, we work with our longstanding partner in kenya, narrowing down hundreds of offerings to the few we bid on. it’s a frenzied and exciting time, with intense competition to secure the most sublime lots. we’re sent samples direct from the auction, and have just a day to taste, debate, compare and then finally make our bids. only a few select lots meet our standard for kenya perfection: wonderfully aromatic, juicy, lively, with complex flavors hinting of citrus and blackberry. this is precision buying down to the finest level, with every lot we buy a prize of the highest quality. many say kenyan coffee is the best in the world – we think our auction lot is the best of the best.  (per lb) 16.95
Mocca-Java - Decaf complex and full-bodied. a blend of java and ethiopian mocca. this water-decaffeinated coffee is a blend of java and ethiopian mocca. it's a good choice for people who like the water-treated method but who want an added dimension in their coffee. the mocca in this blend is from ethiopia, hence the difference in spelling from arabian mocha java, which contains a mocha coffee from yemen  (per lb) 16.95
New Guinea Highlands mellow and aromatically complex. full body, moderate acidity, broad flavor. in our opinion, one of the world's best coffees. new guinea is earth's second-largest island. it lies just north of australia and is divided down the center between the country of papua new guinea (on the east) and indonesia's irian jaya province (on the west). our new guinea coffee comes from papua new guinea, where cultivation started in 1937 with seeds imported from jamaica's blue mountain region. rich volcanic soil and some of the most ideal climatic conditions combine to produce a mild and mellow yet aromatically complex coffee that we consider one of the world's best. its completeness—good body, moderate acidity and broad flavor—suggests old-style jamaica blue mountain before the huge expansion of planting there with the high-yield, less flavorful varietals.  (per lb) 14.95

Reserve Coffees

Per 1/2 Lb. Hand-Selected And Blended To Our Stringent Quality Specifications Peet's Reserve Coffees Represent The Finest Coffee Selections The World's Producers Have To Offer

Jamaica Blue Mountain jamaica's blue mountain is one of the coffee world’s best known origins. but not all coffee associated with this moniker is the same many offerings in fact, being mere blends. our pick, however, is worthy of the title: 100% jamaican, grown on an estate that dates back to the 1800's, processed by hand in a plant of the same era. peet's jamaica blue mountain is subtly complex, sweet, smooth and perfectly balanced - worthy of its renowned origin. there are stringent regulations around what coffee can be called "jamaica blue mountain". it must be grown in a particular region of the blue mountains, at a certain altitude, and certified by the coffee industry board of jamaica. it's a very small district, with but a few estates left producing the old-style quality and mild, aromatic flavor which made the origin so famous. we buy from a single estate in the blue mountain range - the only one we believe produces coffee of the beguiling quality that first established this origin’s reputation.   39.95

Coffees Of The Pacific

Rich Soil, High Altitude And Tropical Climate Combine With 300 Years Of Tradition To Produce Excellent Coffees With Flavored Ranging From Woodsy To Nutty And Earthy

Aged Sumatra a very rich coffee with a slight hint of a tropical wood flavor, a concentrated dried fruit sweetness, herbal notes, and ample body. good aged coffees are very hard to find, due to the lengthy aging process and the fact that coffee exporters usually want to convert their coffee to cash as soon as possible. but there are a few who are willing to wait, knowing that the fine aged coffee can be worth quite a bit more. the challenge is to find the coffee that was good enough in the first place to become the aged coffee worthy of peet’s customers. aging must take place in a tropical environment, where beans take on moisture at the height of the monsoon season, and give it back during the drier season, without ever drying completely. this process deepens the flavor and makes it mellower, while accentuating certain taste components over others.  (per lb) 16.95
(per lb) 14.95
Indo-Pacific - Three Pound Sampler explore the indo-pacific island regions with flavors ranging from woodsy to nutty and earthy. characterized by heavy body and smooth acidity, this sampler comes with a pound each of sumatra, new guinea highland and sulawesi-kalosi. sumatra: very full body, very concentrated flavor. sweet, slightly earthy, herbal nuances with a gutsy richness. a favorite of peet's customers for years. new guinea highlands: a mild, mellow yet aromatically complex coffee. new guinea highland's good body, moderate acidity and broad flavor make it one of the best coffees in the world. sulawesi-kalosi: a rare coffee with unusual depth and complexity. sulawesi-kalosi has a multi-dimensional aromatic character with prominent herbal, nutty, and pleasantly sweet woodsy notes.   48.95
Sulawesi-Kalosi a rare coffee with unusual depth and complexity. rich, full body with a hint of nutty earthiness. semi-aged by peet's to create a unique cup, with depth and flavor to evoke the spice-laden air of the indonesian archipelago.  (per lb) 16.95
Sumatra very full body, very concentrated flavor. sweet, slightly earthy, herbal nuances with a gutsy richness. a favorite of peet's customers for years. also available in decaf. sumatra's coffees are grown almost exclusively by smallholders and processed by the semi-washed or wet-hulled method. the fruit is pulped on the farm, often by means of a hand-cranked mill, and the seeds, still encased in an endocarp, washed in a basket or bucket. they are laid on a mat for the briefest of dryings. collectors purchase and hull the coffee at high internal moisture, removing the parchment, and exposing the beans. they subsequently dry in stages (and infuse with sumatran character) all the way to the godowns in the port of medan. there is little sorting or grading, and this may be the secret of sumatra: the process could not be more elementary; the cup could not be more satisfying. the syrup-like body and rustic complexity of sumatra is particularly well developed in the full-throated peet’s roast.  (per lb) 14.95

Coffees Of The Americas

Altitudes Over 5,000 Feet, Volcanic Soil, And Temperate Climates With Sunny Days And Cool Nights Produce Some Of The Sweetest, Spiciest Coffees Grown Anywhere In The World

Americas - Three Pound Sampler the americas growing regions yield some of the sweetest, spiciest coffees grown anywhere in the world. the americas sampler comes with a pound each of costa rica, guatemala san sebastian, and colombia. costa rica: some of the best coffee in the world comes from costa rica. the flavor is deep and pungent, with a hint of smokiness lying just below the surface. guatemala san sebastian: superbly aromatic, well-balanced with medium body, lively acidity, overtones of spice and chocolate, guatemala san sebastian is one of our favorite latin american coffees. colombia: our selection of colombian coffee is full-bodied with balanced acidity and sweet, well-rounded flavor.   44.95
Blend 101 medium-bodied, sparkling acidity, spicy notes. a complex coffee blended with strictly high-grown coffees from latin america. we use a blend of latin america's best quality coffees for 101. the high altitudes at which these coffees are grown give the blend a sparkling acidity that brings out the flavors inherent in top-quality, high-grown coffee. blend 101 is a little more full-bodied than house blend and a little more complex. it is a favorite of those who like the spicy flavor qualities of latin american coffee wrapped in the ethereal qualities that very high altitudes can produce.   14.50
Colombia full-bodied, balanced acidity and sweet, rounded flavor. colombia produces more washed arabica coffee than any other country. unfortunately, they've largely gone the route of higher-yield varieties. still, if one is willing to work at finding some special lots, it's possible to get exceptional colombian coffee. lately we've been buying a very flavorful colombian coffee from the southern province of huila. this is one region of the country that still grows the old, traditional coffee variety called typica instead of the newer hybrids. we find it very encouraging that enough growers there still believe in traditional quality, enabling quality-conscious buyers to find good coffee. we hope that our support of their efforts will provide incentive for other producers to return to the old varieties, which established colombian coffee's reputation in the first place. our selection is full-bodied and has a sweet, well-rounded flavor.  (per lb) 13.50
Guatemala San Sebastian a renowned region. an heirloom bean. a superlative estate. san sebastian has been a favorite in our tasting room for over 30 years. aromatic yet powerful, reminiscent of fine bittersweet chocolate, a true coffee aristocrat. in the world of coffee-producing countries, and among the ranks of the finest coffee farms, there has to be one that’s the very best. there are few places more suited to coffee production than the antigua valley of guatemala, 5000 feet up, tucked among three massive volcanoes. there are even fewer places where the heirloom variety of arabica coffee known as bourbon produces such sublimely sweet coffee fruit, where the dry climate slows growth just enough so the beans yield tantalizingly complex flavor. and there's just one farm where everything comes together just about perfectly. welcome to finca san sebastian. we've been buying from this farm for over 30 years and this has been a favorite in our tasting room since then: an indication of superlative, consistent quality. in the cup this coffee achieves the remarkable feat of tasting both potent and refined, with aromatic grace and shades of the best bittersweet chocolate. we buy from many of the great antigua farms, as our finest blends attest, but for our single-origin offering we reserve the best of the best, peet's guatemala san sebastian.  (per lb) 15.95

Coffees Of Africa & Arabia

The Ancient Homes Of All Arabica Coffee Beans, Africa And Arabia Have Conditions For Producing Truly Outstanding Coffees With Distinctive Aromas Of Flowers And Fruit

African Sampler - Three Pound Sampler this special sampler brings together three offerings from east africa. at their finest, the coffees of east africa are in a category of their own. they are uniquely aromatic, with silky, syrupy textures. this coffee journey comes with one pound each: uzuri african blend, kenya auction lot and ethiopian fancy. uzuri african blend: this blend represents a journey of small scale farmers improving their lives through coffee quality, culminating in a malty sweet east african blend with a medley of dark berry notes. uzuri blend is designed expressly to support the efforts of african farm families to improve the quality of their coffee, and thereby the quality of their lives. join us in celebrating their amazing accomplishments. kenya auction lot: the most aromatic of any coffee, these beans brew a lively cup with complex flavors hinting of citrus and blackberry. ethiopian fancy: from the birthplace of coffee, ethiopian fancy is a tangy, pungent brew with a lingering floral aroma.   49.95
Ancient Abyssinia delicate and floral with hints of jasmine and citrus. a rare artifact unearthed from the highlands of yirgacheffe, ethiopia, one of the world’s finest coffee growing regions. roasted in the medium roast style to highlight the floral notes. ancient abyssinia will be offered for a limited time online and in-stores. it will be avilable online for 4 roasts only: july 11, 18, 25 and aug 1. ethiopia, known as abyssinia in ancient times, historically serves as both of the origin of mankind and the birthplace of coffee. the country’s history, landscape, and people are steeped in tradition and culture. this coffee pays homage to that heritage, especially to the ethiopian ritual - unique among east african coffee producing countries - of drinking their own coffee. from the most modern, cosmopolitan cities to the most remote villages, families still pan roast their best beans in a wok over an open fire, grind them in a wooden mortar and pestle, and brew them in a beautiful traditional clay pot called a jebena. the resulting cup is aromatic and soul satisfying.   19.95
Arabian Mocha Sanani distinctive, pungent, winy flavor; full-bodied and exceedingly complex aromatic character. grown in yemen on the arabian peninsula, these small, rounded beans are irregular in form, size, and color. despite this abnormality (or perhaps because of it), they yield one of the finest cups of coffee on earth. arabian mocha sanani has a distinctive, pungent, winy flavor that is very full-bodied and that is accompanied by an exceedingly complex aromatic character. this coffee is excellent either straight or blended, as in the classic blend with java. its singular flavor can complement nearly any other coffee. the mocha variety of coffee grows on barely cultivated land on low bushes that develop under very dry conditions. when the majority of coffee cherries are ripe, the farmers pick all the cherries at once and spread them out to dry on hardened earth patios. the dried cherries are passed through millstones to remove the hulls and to release the two coffee beans inside. this rather primitive method of producing coffee goes back centuries and accounts for the classic flavor that this wonderful coffee displays. it's worth noting that this coffee is grown organically. it is not something the farmers set out to do, but there is probably no more primitive coffee-growing area on earth. the region is very remote, and the dried coffee must be carried out of the steep valleys by donkeys.  (per lb) 21.95
East Africa Duo experience all the variety east africa has to offer with ancient abyssinia and river gura peaberry. ancient abyssinia is delicate and floral, while river gura peaberry is bold and bright. the east africa duo is an online exclusive and will be offered for 4 roasts only: july 11, 18, 25 and aug 1. ancient abyssinia: delicate and floral with hints of jasmine and citrus. a rare artifact unearthed from the highlands of yirgacheffe, ethiopia, one of the world’s finest coffee growing regions. roasted in the medium roast style to highlight the floral notes. river gura peaberry: dense and bold with focused brightness and notes of black currant. named for the river gura in central kenya which cuts through aberdares national park.   39.90
Ethiopian Fancy medium-bodied coffee that is tangy and pungent with a lingering floral, almost perfumy aroma. ethiopian coffee can be described as medium-bodied and full of flavor. from good lots, you get a tangy, pungent brew with a lingering floral-almost perfumy-aroma. the floral aromatic characteristics are easily noted in the freshly ground coffee as well. we favor the coffee from yirga chefé in sidamo state, east of lake abaya. peet’s ethiopian fancy is a classically prepared, washed arabica. first, the perfectly ripe cherry is selected and sorted to eliminate any potential defects. it is pulped that same day so the bean emerges from the fruit unharmed: no nicks, cuts, rotting or other damage. after just the right period of fermentation allows the fruit to loosen from the seed, the coffee is thoroughly washed in high mountain waters. squeaky clean, it is transferred to raised drying beds to protect it from any possible ground contamination. there, farmers rotate it methodically and frequently lest it become sun-scorched - a gentle, uniform drying that allows all its inherent specialty to emerge. in short, everything is done to enable this coffee’s unparalleled and unique flavor to shine. the result is crystalline clear in its flavor delivery, pierced through with distinct citric notes (think lemons), and topped with a fancy floral note of jasmine blossoms – all in all, an incredibly distinct and fancy flavor experience.  (per lb) 15.95

Earl Grey With Lavender peet’s unique blend of five teas mixed with fragrant lavender flowers. a refreshing and relaxing earl grey. it was fashionable in england during the 19th century to make "house blends" of teas, sometimes including other botanicals in the blend. this gave rise to the popularity of bergamot as a tea flavoring, but there were other, now forgotten tea blends as well. this earl grey uses french lavender flowers with a blend of five teas that achieves a unique floral and herbal cup quality. there is no other blend of teas quite like this one (and is quite a surprise to more than few tea drinkers), but it is an old favorite at our original berkeley store. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   6.45
English Breakfast medium-bodied blend of indian teas with a brisk character and tangy finish. also available in tea bags. the brisk and slightly tangy character of high-grown india teas makes english breakfast a favorite among peet’s customers. like any good english breakfast tea, the blend is formulated with milk and sugar in mind. still, the cup is mild and balanced enough to enjoy straight, allowing the natural lemony qualities of the tea to emerge. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   6.45
Irish Breakfast full-flavored, complex, and pungent indian teas, with hints of malt and citrus. irish breakfast is composed of india teas, and it is a fuller, more complex and pungent blend than english breakfast. the irish are among the highest consumers of tea per capita in the world, so it is fitting that our irish breakfast be a serious tea drinker’s cup. this blend emphasizes the pungent and complex flavors of the northeast indian teas, with their malty, floral, and sweetly dry flavors. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   6.45
Mango Iced Tea this blend contains black teas, mango essence and marigold petals. the teas are selected for their smooth and refreshing qualities, and the mango flavor adds a pleasantly sweet and fruity aroma. for the best tasting iced tea, we strongly recommend brewing your tea leaves with boiling water, and then chilling the liquor. only boiling water can release the flavor and aroma from tea leaves, and preparing tea from lukewarm or cold water is a complete waste. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   6.95
Masala Chai a blend of india teas with cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, cloves and pepper. brew with milk and sugar. in india, "chai" is the word for tea, and "masala" means a mixture of spices. in many parts of india, "masala chai" is prepared using local tea boiled in a mixture of water and milk, with lots of sugar, and whatever spices that are popular locally. there are probably as many variations on the recipe as there are households in india, but the general result is a spicy, sweet, and milky tea. our masala chai blend incorporates pungent assam and south india broken leaf teas blended with cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, cloves, and fresh-ground tellicherry peppercorns. this should be brewed fresh and mixed with freshly heated milk and sugar to taste. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   8.45

Pumphrey's Blend proprietary blend of black and green teas. complex, brisk cup with a fresh and flowery aroma. it's unusual to blend black and green teas, because the flavors are so different; but our pumphrey’s blend is a blend of exactly that. blending tea is art for the palate, and science for the leaves themselves, which should be of a fairly regular size for consistent mixing. the blend incorporates black teas from both india and china, green tea, and jasmine-scented green tea. the result is a complex, brisk cup with a fresh and flowery aroma. pumphrey's blend is a longtime favorite at peet's for serving iced. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   8.45
Russian Caravan well-rounded blend of china blacks, with a full, smooth, slightly smoky flavor. this tea is not of russian origin, but is a blend in the tradition of the 19th century russian tea trade. horse and camel caravans would spend sixteen months making the roundtrip journey to eastern china and back, arriving in the russian capital laden with chests of tea. the tea quite likely aged a bit during its long journey, and "russian caravan" tea probably improved with the opening of the trans-siberian railroad. peet's russian caravan is our own blend of china black teas with a full, smooth, and smoky flavor. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   6.45
Scottish Breakfast scottish breakfast this blend combines hearty india teas with the pungent smokiness of lapsang souchong. evocative of warm hearths and rugged scottish countrysides, this is a rich, hearty brew. the blend combines india teas with the unmistakable smokiness of lapsang souchong. there are multiple leaf sizes in the mixture, ranging from small, flaky broken orange pekoe leaf pieces to long, souchong grade whole leaves. it's a good tea for cold weather, with its full body, pungent taste, and woodsmoke aroma. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups. this tea is also available by the pound. submit a review customer reviewsemployee reviews   6.45
Summer House Iced Tea a brisk yet mellow blend of teas, made especially for brewing iced tea. iced tea is an altogether different drink than hot tea, and it requires teas that have a more smooth and refreshing flavor. summer house contains three teas from china and india, and the blend has a slightly sweet and toasty note with a mildly brisk flavor. for the best tasting iced tea, we strongly recommend brewing your tea leaves with boiling water, and then chilling the liquor. only boiling water can release the flavor and aroma from tea leaves, and preparing tea from lukewarm or cold water is a complete waste. summer house may cloud slightly when iced, but this is a natural property of fine teas from certain origins, and does not affect flavor. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   6.95
Osmanthus Fancy a proprietary blend of china black tea with osmanthus flowers. deep, rich and sweet taste, with a heady floral and fruit aroma. osmanthus fancy is a special offering tea and is available for a limited time. osmanthus is a yellow-gold flower grown in southern china, and its pleasant aroma could be described as a combination of apricot, chamomile, and orange flower. it has been used for centuries in china as an ingredient in teas, as well as foods and perfumes. this proprietary blend marries osmanthus flowers with a select single-estate south china f.o.p. black tea to make a complex, fragrant and memorable cup.   10.95

Assam Extra Fancy our best assam has a distinctly malty aroma and a bright red liquor. lively, full-bodied and complex taste with lots of depth. there are over 700 tea estates within assam, yet only a handful of these have the ability to produce top-quality lots. add to this the fact that less and less tea is produced by the traditional "orthodox" methods, and it is no wonder that searching for the best assams feels a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. we taste literally hundreds of assam teas each year, and the rewards are worth it when we find a few lots that have the old, malty flavor that made assam famous in the first place. assam extra fancy generally consists of flowery orange pekoe teas from the best gardens at the peak of the second flush, evident by the lovely golden tips. the flavor is bold and astringent, yet with a sweet malty taste, and hints of honey, toast, and wood. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups   12.45

"kalimpong" is not an estate name, but a town on the eastern edge of the darjeeling tea area that at one time was a stop on the ancient trade route between india and tibet. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   15.45
Lion Mountain Keemun smooth, sweet taste characteristic of the finest keemun teas. hints of pine and incense. keemun teas are grown in an area with dense forests and many mountain springs, on hills that form the northern tip of the huang shan mountain range. lion mountain keemun is a rigorously graded tea, with only the smallest orange pekoe grade leaves selected for this type. the result is a highly uniform leaf, deep green to almost black, with little visible tip. the tea has a complex aroma, containing perfume-like orchid and smoky incense notes, while the cup is rich and concentrated with sweet, flinty, plum-like flavors. keemuns are the best keeping of all black teas, mellowing with age but keeping their sweet and aromatic character. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   14.95
Lung Ching Dragonwell the long, flat leaves yield a light emerald cup with a rich, slightly nutty taste. this is probably the most famous green tea both inside and outside of china. lung ching means dragon well, and the tea derives its name from the beneficent dragon said to live in a local well. lung ching traditionally comes from the west lake district of zhejiang province, although much of the production has moved southeast to the mountains around the town of xinchang. lung ching is still made the way in which it has been for centuries, by individuals hand-rolling the leaves in a hot, steep-sided pan. this "pan-firing" method requires great care to match the temperatures with the size and tenderness of the leaves. when done with skill, and when using leaves from the spring growth, the result is a rich and nutty-tasting green tea, with natural hints of fresh corn and vegetables. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   17.95
Phoenix Mountain Oolong long, jet-black leaves that yield a sweet, rich and pungent flavor with hints of apricot and roasted grains. phoenix (fenghuang) mountain is located near the coast in china's guangdong province. for several hundred years, small farmers have grown a unique strain of the tea bush here, notable for its thick central trunk. the freshly picked leaves are hand-processed in small batches by skilled workers, who labor through the night alternately rolling the leaves, then allowing them to rest. afterward, the leaves are baked four to five separate times over coals until completely dried. the long, jet-black leaves turn olive green after steeping, and yield a strong, natural flavor with hints of apricot, plum and roasted grains. hand-crafting oolong tea on pheonix mountain in guangdong, china. each 2 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 20 cups.   12.95

Snow Leopard a whole-leaf white tea from fujian, china. smooth taste with fragrant notes of herbs, fresh grass, grapes and flowers. snow leopard is the finest quality white tea of the style known in china as pai mu tan, and is made from specially selected varietals of the tea bush. white teas go through minimal processing, but are highly dependent on environmental conditions for their quality. plucking must occur in spring when the "flush" is at the correct size, and there is no rain or dew on the leaves. the fresh-plucked leaves are first briefly withered in direct sunshine, and then brought into open-air sheds for full withering/drying for a couple of days, where the wind moving over the tea is regulated by shutters on the shed walls. the final removal of moisture is done by very low baking. the resulting leaf style is open and irregularly shaped, composed of whole wilted leaves with whitish tips. snow leopard is smooth, with a fragrance reminiscent of herbs, fresh grass, and flowers, finishing with a white grape sweetness. each 2 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 20 cups.   10.95

Yin Hao Jasmine he finest grade of jasmine tea, it's scented five times with fresh jasmine blossoms. sweet and perfumy. jasmine teas vary according to the quality of the tea base, and the skill and flower quality used for scenting. yin hao jasmine has the best of all these elements. the tea base for yin hao jasmine is completed in april during the spring harvest, then tucked away until august when the finest jasmine blooms. the flowers are plucked at noontime and kept until nightfall. then, as the evening’s temperature cools, the flowers open with a distinct popping sound. the flowers and tea are then blended together in layers, known as the "marrying" of the tea and jasmine. after several hours the jasmine petals are removed from the tea, and another round of flowers is applied. while ordinary grades are scented a couple of times, yin hao jasmine tea is scented with fresh flowers from five to seven times. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   15.45

Darjeeling Fancy Organic whole-leaf black tea with a sweet, floral aroma, and a pungent taste. an excellent everyday darjeeling. darjeeling is renowned for producing the finest teas in india, but it also produces the widest variety of flavor of any single growing area. the hills were planted during the 19th century with both imported china plants and with the indigenous assam plants, and many hybrids populate the gardens today. the elevation of a single estate may sweep from 2,000 feet up to 6,000 feet, with the temperature and cloud cover varying widely. the best are the high-grown teas, where the cool weather slows the growth of the leaves and concentrates the flavor. add to this the three distinct plucking seasons of first flush, second flush, and autumnals, and the range of quality from even a single estate can vary enormously. "second flush" refers to the high-quality growing period of late may through june, and is by no means "second rate." darjeeling fancy is a leaf grade second flush tea with noticeably puckery quality and a rich, flowery bouquet. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   10.45
Gunpowder Organic tightly rolled green tea with a bittersweet and slightly smoky character. gunpowder tea gets its name from the characteristics of the leaves, which are rolled into small, greyish-green pellets resembling old-fashioned gunpowder. the appearance is important, in that the small, tightly rolled leaves of the top grades have much more flavor than the more irregular, open roll of the lower grades. gunpowder is a highly processed tea, with long periods of rolling followed by extensive grading for size, shape, and density. the best organic lots come from eastern china, and have a full body, pungent flavor, and slightly smoky aroma. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   6.45
Hubei Silver Tip Organic a crisp and light green tea with a sweet, refreshing aftertaste. this tea comes from central china’s hubei province. it is grown in the yi chong gorge of the yangtze river, about halfway up from the river level. the bud and leaf sets are plucked to a uniform size standard, and the end result of careful leaf processing is a narrow, dark green leaf with silver tips. we like this tea for its classic "china green" flavor, the mellow vegetal notes tasting more subdued than the green teas of japan. hubei silver tip does show a more brisk astringency than most, with hints of fresh vegetables and sweet lemon. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   15.45
Jade Mist Organic this green tea has a fresh, bright taste with a mildly brisk flavor that's very drinkable. jade mist gets its name from the fog and mist showers that shroud the green hills of jin shan in china’s zhejiang province, where this tea is grown. careful measures are taken to produce this tea organically in accordance with international standards. the cup is fresh, bright and brisk, with aromatic hints of green peas and kale, leaving a crisp aftertaste. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.   9.45

Red Rooibos Organic Teabags our newest herbal tea is a mellow, deep red cup with a satisfying saffron-vanilla aroma. our rich-tasting rooibos is certified organic and a great caffeine-free alternative to black tea. rooibos (pronounced "roy-bus") is only grown where it was first discovered in antiquity, in the cedarberg mountains of western cape province, south africa. the indigenous khoi-khoi tribe were the first to harvest the needle-like leaves of this shrub growing in the wild. early in the 20th century a russian immigrant pioneered the trade in rooibos as an herbal "tea," introducing it throughout south africa and later abroad. the soft, new green growth is harvested by hand once a year, then taken to the processing factory. the leaves are bruised between rollers to trigger the oxidation process, not unlike the production of black tea. the leaves are spread on an open court and covered with sheets to go through the "sweat process," developing the deep red color and characteristic flavor. finally, the leaves are sun-dried, graded and shipped. we have gone to some lengths to find not only the most flavorful rooibos on the market, but one that is organically grown as well. with it's aroma of saffron and vanilla, faintly malty taste, full body and smooth texture with a touch of astringency, it's a surprisingly versatile cup hot, iced, sweetened or plain.  (25 per bag) 6.45

Assam Golden Tip Teabags a rich, full-bodied, malty, and pungent cup; excellent with milk. assam is the largest tea-growing area in the world, laying on both sides of the brahmaputra river in northeastern india. this place is home to wild elephants, rhinos, and india’s only indigenous tea plants. from the first eight chests of tea sold in the london auction in 1839, assam teas have risen to become the pre-eminent choice of british brands, due to their strong liquor and perfect compatibility with milk. assam golden tip is so called because of the appearance of the bright golden leaves interspersed among the black leaves in the dry form. the golden tips are a result of the youngest leaves turning color during manufacture, as they do most strikingly during the peak quality period of the second flush. assam golden tip brews a full-bodied cup with bold pungency and a sweet, malty aroma.  (per 25 bag) 7.45
Darjeeling Choice Teabags a tangy tea with a bright and penetrating flavor; supports milk very well. "land of the thunderbolt" is the meaning of darjeeling, and it is an appropriate moniker for the land that produces such lively teas. the district of darjeeling includes some 70 tea gardens, situated on steep hillsides with the bengal plain directly south, and the himalayan crest directly north. weather, soil, high altitude, and some of india’s oldest tea bushes create unique teas that have resisted imitation anywhere else. darjeeling choice is a broken orange pekoe (b.o.p.) grade tea, emphasizing the brisk qualities of this origin, and with relatively good body.  (per 25 bag) 6.45

English Breakfast Teabags medium-bodied blend of india teas with a brisk character and tangy finish. the brisk and slightly tangy character of high-grown india teas makes english breakfast a favorite among peet's customers. like any good english breakfast tea, the blend is formulated with milk and sugar in mind. still, the cup is mild and balanced enough to enjoy straight, allowing the natural lemony qualities of the tea to emerge. box contains 25 tea bags. each tea bag comes individually wrapped:  (per 25bag) 6.45
Jade Green Iced Tea Bags jade green is a proprietary blend of two teas, both from china, and sourced specifically for enjoying iced. jade green is made up of a lightly oxidized jade oolong from fujian province (the jade), mixed with high-fired green tea from zhejiang province (the green). this unique combination makes a perfect balance; a smooth, nutty, fresh and multilayered flavor with a refreshing finish. jade green iced tea is packaged in boxes containing eight large-sized teabags. each bag brews one quart of iced tea. for the best tasting iced tea, we strongly recommend brewing your tea leaves with hot water, and then chilling the liquor. jade green iced tea should be brewed using cooler water, around 180 degrees. this can be achieved by letting the water sit for 2 minutes after a rolling boil or by combining some cold, filtered water with the hot water.  (per 8 lb) 6.95
Jasmine Fancy Teabags scented with jasmine flowers to create a fresh, aromatic, uplifting cup. jasmine is a native of the persian gulf area, and was brought to china sometime before the third century a.d. jasmine-scented teas have been made for at least 800 years, with the finest produced in the province of fujian. "pouchong" tea is used as the base, a style of green tea that has slight oxidation, and the resulting cup of jasmine fancy has an amber hue. the scenting is a natural process, involving mixing the leaves with fresh jasmine flowers so that the tea absorbs the scent. contrary to popular belief, the better grades of jasmine tea have the least amount of petals remaining in the finished tea. the dry petals lose their scent to the tea, and removing the spent petals results in a more concentrated flavor. box contains 25 tea bags. each tea bag comes individually wrapped:  (per 25 bag) 6.45

Masala Chai Teabags a spicy blend of indian teas with cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, clove, and pepper. brew it strong with milk and sugar. in india, "chai" is the word for tea, and "masala" means a mixture of spices. in many parts of india, "masala chai" is prepared using local tea boiled in a mixture of water and milk, with lots of sugar, and whatever spices that are popular locally. there are probably as many variations on the recipe as there are households in india, but the general result is a spicy, sweet, and milky tea, further variations of which are now being promulgated in the u.s. most "chai" in this country is prepared using a pre-made concentrate to which hot milk is added; these often are excessively sweet and the amount of tea in them can be negligible. our masala chai incorporates pungent assam and south india broken leaf teas blended with cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, cloves, and fresh-ground tellicherry peppercorns. this should be brewed fresh and mixed with freshly heated milk and sugar to taste. box contains 25 tea bags. each tea bag comes individually wrapped:  (per 25 bag) 7.45
Sencha Teabags a bright green tea with fresh cut-grass notes, this is the classic japanese tea. sencha is naturally rich in antioxidants. japan's green teas have accentuated vegetal flavors, with aromatic notes of cut grass and ocean air. this is largely due to the initial steaming of the leaves, a practice that heightens the rich, fresh, almost raw leaf qualities of the tea. the brightness of the liquor is developed as well, and the best quality senchas are a lime-green color in the cup. while more and more "sencha" is actually china-grown tea made for the japanese domestic market, we believe the distinctive varietals and expert leaf processing within japan is necessary for producing a cup of true sencha. box contains 25 tea bags. each tea bag comes individually wrapped:  (per 25 bag) 8.45

Genmai Cha a traditional blend of roasted rice grains with fine japan green tea. toasty and malty with a smooth, rounded body and satisfying aroma. one of japan's most unique teas, genmai cha means "roasted rice tea." this blend originated with japanese peasants who would stretch their precious supply of tea by blending it with roasted rice, in an era when tea was still a barely affordable luxury. over time, the toasty, malty yet smooth and refreshing flavor of genmai cha developed a following on its own merits, and today it is quite popular internationally. ours is a superior grade of this classic tea, primarily because of the top quality sencha leaf that forms the base of the blend. in addition, the hulled, boiled, and roasted rice grains are skillfully processed and strictly graded. the result is a very drinkable beverage with a rounded body and satisfying aroma. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.  (per 4oz) 10.45

(per 4oz) 6.45
(per 4oz) 15.45

Jasmine Fancy a mellow china pouchong tea naturally scented with jasmine flowers. also available in tea bags. jasmine is a native of the persian gulf area, and was brought to china sometime before the third century a.d. jasmine-scented teas have been made for at least 800 years, with the finest produced in the province of fujian. "pouchong" tea is used as the base, a style of green tea that has slight oxidation, and the resulting cup of jasmine fancy has an amber hue. the scenting is a natural process, involving mixing the leaves with fresh jasmine flowers so that the tea absorbs the scent. contrary to popular belief, the better grades of jasmine tea have the least amount of petals remaining in the finished tea. the dry petals lose their scent to the tea, and removing the spent petals results in a more concentrated flavor. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.  (per 4oz) 6.45
(per 4oz) 17.95
Sencha a bright green tea with fresh cut-grass notes, this is the classic japanese tea. sencha is naturally rich in antioxidants. japan's green teas have accentuated vegetal flavors, with aromatic notes of cut grass and ocean air. this is largely due to the initial steaming of the leaves, a practice that heightens the rich, fresh, almost raw leaf qualities of the tea. the brightness of the liquor is developed as well, and the best quality senchas are a lime-green color in the cup. while more and more "sencha" is actually china-grown tea made for the japanese domestic market, we believe the distinctive varietals and expert leaf processing within japan is necessary for producing a cup of true sencha. each 4 oz tin of loose leaf tea makes about 40 cups.  (per 4oz) 10.45

Darjeeling Fancy Organic By The Pound whole-leaf black tea with a sweet, floral aroma, and a pungent taste. an excellent everyday darjeeling. darjeeling is renowned for producing the finest teas in india, but it also produces the widest variety of flavor of any single growing area. the hills were planted during the 19th century with both imported china plants and with the indigenous assam plants, and many hybrids populate the gardens today. the elevation of a single estate may sweep from 2,000 feet up to 6,000 feet, with the temperature and cloud cover varying widely. the best are the high-grown teas, where the cool weather slows the growth of the leaves and concentrates the flavor. add to this the three distinct plucking seasons of first flush, second flush, and autumnals, and the range of quality from even a single estate can vary enormously. "second flush" refers to the high-quality growing period of late may through june, and is by no means "second rate." darjeeling fancy is a leaf grade second flush tea with noticeably puckery quality and a rich, flowery bouquet.   39.80

Earl Grey With Lavender By The Pound peet's unique blend of five teas mixed with fragrant lavender flowers. a refreshing and relaxing earl grey. it was fashionable in england during the 19th century to make "house blends" of teas, sometimes including other botanicals in the blend. this gave rise to the popularity of bergamot as a tea flavoring, but there were other, now forgotten tea blends as well. this earl grey uses french lavender flowers with a blend of five teas that achieves a unique floral and herbal cup quality. there is no other blend of teas quite like this one (and is quite a surprise to more than few tea drinkers), but it is an old favorite at our original berkeley store.   23.80

Golden Dragon Oolong By The Half Pound unusually lush, fruity, and floral fragrance with a sweet, delicate taste. hand-twisted whole leaves. golden dragon oolong is our top quality formosa tea, with a distinctive sweet, dry, peach-pit flavor and floral aroma. this tea receives more attention from its planting through leaf processing than almost any other tea on earth. bushes set aside for growing golden dragon oolong are grown in shade to slow the leaf growth and develop unique properties. unlike other fine teas, the leaves are allowed to grow longer prior to plucking, and instead of two leaves and a bud, three leaves and a bud are plucked. after infusion, one can pick out of the pot entire leaf bud sets, still intact from the moment of plucking. to make the tea, the leaves are first withered in the sun for two hours. then, several pounds of leaf are wrapped in cotton and hand-pressed, so as not to tear the leaves. the leaves are then unwrapped and allowed to wither and oxidize in shade; then all three steps are repeated multiple times. to finish the tea, the leaves are first pan-fired, graded, then finally fired in baskets over hot coals.  (per 8oz) 69.80
Gunpowder Organic By The Pound tightly rolled green tea with a bittersweet and slightly smoky character. gunpowder tea gets its name from the characteristics of the leaves, which are rolled into small, greyish-green pellets resembling old-fashioned gunpowder. the appearance is important, in that the small, tightly rolled leaves of the top grades have much more flavor than the more irregular, open roll of the lower grades. gunpowder is a highly processed tea, with long periods of rolling followed by extensive grading for size, shape, and density. the best organic lots come from eastern china, and have a full body, pungent flavor, and slightly smoky aroma.   23.80

Keemun Fancy By The Pound smooth, mellow, and comforting flavor with a toasty, crushed-apple aroma. of all the black teas that china produces, keemun is perhaps the most well-known. the name keemun is a corruption of its name of origin, namely the qimen county in southwestern anhui province. although keemun is a world-renowned tea, it has a relatively short history. in 1875, a young entrepreneur began producing black tea in qimen, where before only average quality green tea had been produced. since that time keemun has gained a reputation for a unique yet indescribable flavor, with hints of smoky pine, orchid, cooked apple, and a rich, sweet taste.   23.80
Lapsang Souchong By The Pound smooth and clean with a powerful smoky scent. traditionally dried with smoke from burning pine root. many china teas have a subtle toasty note, but lapsang souchong has a dominating smoky flavor. legend has it that the smoking process was discovered by accident. during the qing dynasty, an army unit passing through a village camped out in its tea factory, which was filled with fresh leaves awaiting processing. when the soldiers left and the workers were able to return, there was not enough time to dry the tea the customary way. so they lit open fires of pine wood to hasten the drying. upon taking the tea to market, to their surprise the new tea created a sensation. today, lapsang souchong is first withered over pine root fires, then panfried, rolled and oxidized. the leaves are then placed in bamboo baskets and hung on wooden racks over smoking pine fires to dry and absorb the smoke. the result is a powerfully smoky aroma coupled with a sweet and mild taste.   23.80
Lion Mountain Keemun By The Pound smooth, sweet taste characteristic of the finest keemun teas. hints of pine and incense. keemun teas are grown in an area with dense forests and many mountain springs, on hills that form the northern tip of the huang shan mountain range. lion mountain keemun is a rigorously graded tea, with only the smallest orange pekoe grade leaves selected for this type. the result is a highly uniform leaf, deep green to almost black, with little visible tip. the tea has a complex aroma, containing perfume-like orchid and smoky incense notes, while the cup is rich and concentrated with sweet, flinty, plum-like flavors. keemuns are the best keeping of all black teas, mellowing with age but keeping their sweet and aromatic character.   57.80
Lung Ching Dragonwell By The Pound the long, flat leaves yield a light emerald cup with a rich, slightly nutty taste. this is probably the most famous green tea both inside and outside of china. lung ching means dragon well, and the tea derives its name from the beneficent dragon said to live in a local well. lung ching traditionally comes from the west lake district of zhejiang province, although much of the production has moved southeast to the mountains around the town of xinchang. lung ching is still made the way in which it has been for centuries, by individuals hand-rolling the leaves in a hot, steep-sided pan. this "pan-firing" method requires great care to match the temperatures with the size and tenderness of the leaves. when done with skill, and when using leaves from the spring growth, the result is a rich and nutty-tasting green tea, with natural hints of fresh corn and vegetables.   69.80
Mango Iced Tea By The Pound this blend contains black teas, mango essence and marigold petals. the teas are selected for their smooth and refreshing qualities, and the mango flavor adds a pleasantly sweet and fruity aroma. for the best tasting iced tea, we strongly recommend brewing your tea leaves with boiling water, and then chilling the liquor. only boiling water can release the flavor and aroma from tea leaves, and preparing tea from lukewarm or cold water is a complete waste.   25.80
Masala Chai By The Pound a blend of india teas with cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, cloves and pepper. brew with milk and sugar. in india, "chai" is the word for tea, and "masala" means a mixture of spices. in many parts of india, "masala chai" is prepared using local tea boiled in a mixture of water and milk, with lots of sugar, and whatever spices that are popular locally. there are probably as many variations on the recipe as there are households in india, but the general result is a spicy, sweet, and milky tea. our masala chai blend incorporates pungent assam and south india broken leaf teas blended with cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, cloves, and fresh-ground tellicherry peppercorns. this should be brewed fresh and mixed with freshly heated milk and sugar to taste.   31.80
Phoenix Mountain Oolong By The Half Pound long, jet-black leaves that yield a sweet, rich and pungent flavor with hints of apricot and roasted grains. phoenix (fenghuang) mountain is located near the coast in china’s guangdong province. for several hundred years, small farmers have grown a unique strain of the tea bush here, notable for its thick central trunk. the freshly picked leaves are hand-processed in small batches by skilled workers, who labor through the night alternately rolling the leaves, then allowing them to rest. afterward, the leaves are baked four to five separate times over coals until completely dried. the long, jet-black leaves turn olive green after steeping, and yield a strong, natural flavor with hints of apricot, plum and roasted grains.  (per 8oz) 49.80

Pumphrey's Blend By The Pound a proprietary blend of black and green teas. complex, brisk cup with a fresh and flowery aroma. it's unusual to blend black and green teas, because the flavors are so different; but our pumphrey’s blend is a blend of exactly that. blending tea is art for the palate, and science for the leaves themselves, which should be of a fairly regular size for consistent mixing. the blend incorporates black teas from both india and china, green tea, and jasmine-scented green tea. the result is a complex, brisk cup with a fresh and flowery aroma. pumphrey's blend is a longtime favorite at peet's for serving iced.   1.80
Russian Caravan By The Pound well-rounded blend of china blacks, with a full, smooth, slightly smoky flavor. this tea is not of russian origin, but is a blend in the tradition of the 19th century russian tea trade. horse and camel caravans would spend sixteen months making the roundtrip journey to eastern china and back, arriving in the russian capital laden with chests of tea. the tea quite likely aged a bit during its long journey, and "russian caravan" tea probably improved with the opening of the trans-siberian railroad. peet's russian caravan is our own blend of china black teas with a full, smooth, and smoky flavor.   23.80

Snow Leopard By The Half Pound a whole-leaf white tea from fujian, china. smooth taste, and fragrant with notes of herbs, fresh grass, grapes and flowers. snow leopard is the finest quality white tea of the style known in china as pai mu tan, and is made from specially selected varietals of the tea bush. white teas go through minimal processing, but are highly dependent on environmental conditions for their quality. plucking must occur in spring when the "flush" is at the correct size, and there is no rain or dew on the leaves. the fresh-plucked leaves are first briefly withered in direct sunshine, and then brought into open-air sheds for full withering/drying for a couple of days, where the wind moving over the tea is regulated by shutters on the shed walls. the final removal of moisture is done by very low baking. the resulting leaf style is open and irregularly shaped, composed of whole wilted leaves with whitish tips. snow leopard is smooth, with a fragrance reminiscent of herbs, fresh grass, and flowers, finishing with a white grape sweetness.   41.80
