    Uninvited guests

From the time we entered we were treated as an annoyance. Although the restaurant was not busy we were seated by the kitchen door and made to feel most unwelcome. The wait staff appeared to be more than adequate but we got the waiter who do not want to be bothered with us. The service bordered on rude, including that of the maitre d. I would not recommend it.

Sam':s Last of the good old days

We are native San Franciscans and delight in going to Sam's over 30 years. The staff is outstanding and always attentive to one's needs. The food is always fresh and hot when served. Portions are sometimes too large but always excellently prepared. The setting is plain and unpretentious. One need not worry to vacate your place as you will not be rushed to turn tables. You will not be disappointed.

    Unpleasant experience

I went to Sams grill after the concierge at The Palace hotel recommended it. I was there on Wed Aug 24,2011 at approx 6pm. We were greeted by a maitre'd wearing a tuxedo. He didn't say a word but led us to a table and said "here" before turning and walking away. Our female waitress was "cordial" but not overly pleasant. I ordered the salmon and rice with mixed vegetables as did my dinner partner. After finding the third 2 inch bone I complained to the maitre'd who stated "unfortunately a big cut of salmon sometimes has bones in it. Now that you know they are there you have to eat it slowly" I proceeded to look through the fish and I found an additional 7 bones, totalling 10 large bones. Additionally,The rice was so hard you could not eat it. When we told our waitress she brought one small red potato cut in two. The food tasted ok,not very good, but I was only able to eat 1/4 of the fish and none of the rice. The service was very poor. They made us feel like WE did something wrong. We paid the bill and left without saying another word.

    The Best Petrale Sole Anywhere

Have been going to this delightful financial district spot for years and years -- and think the Petrale Sole is the BEST we have ever had - ANYWHERE! Can't match it! Everything else is delish too, but can't seem to get past ordering the Petrale Sole!!

    Play It Again Sam

Everytime I visit SF - I catch lunch at Sam's. The food is always excellent, the waiters are always on their game and the result is predictable par excellence.
