If all you care about is the place....

I have eaten here twice at lunch. I found the food poorly presented, pretty much the same regardless of what was ordered (the preparation is always trendy so lots of things taste the same, even dishes that would be better without trendy additions) and the portions small. I think it is overpriced and the waiters are not very adept at serving without interrupting. I have been told it is a beautiful place at night with live music, but at noon it just looks dated and a little silly.

    Terrific Chinese food

My wife and I dined at Shanghai 1930 with another couple. All 4 of us were impressed with the food, service, and atmosphere. The bar area is very spacious and comfortable for before-dinner drinks, and both it and the dining room are very attractive. The food was interesting and extremely well prepared. I would definitely return for another meal and recommend the restaurant to others.

    Snobby fare at snobby venue

This restaurant is a little bit overrated...yes, it is in the heart of downtown SF, but there is no value in the experience otherwise. the food is very small in portions and not very tasty...the concoctions were overpriced. the atmosphere was that of a rich snob thumbing his nose at people that order the most bargain items. i don't mind spending money for good food and value, but if you are looking for that, stay clear of Shanghai 1930.

    Great for afterwork drinks

I went for the first time with some co-workers, and the atmosphere was perfect for happy hour. The bar wasn't too crowded and afforded us some privacy. Their signature drinks were tasty but could've been stronger. The food was good but overpriced for what it was (dim sum). I would definitely go back for afterwork drinks.
