Delicious, italian seafood.
From the look on their website, SM's front maybe looks a little more presentable, but the times my wife and I have gone in the past, it's appearance seemed at first glance to suggest a clipjoint. However, such is not the case. In fact, SM's ambience is instead that of an unpretentious, city restaurant for locals who know where to go, and don't need to be suckered in by allure. The staff is not fawningly servile but is instead genuine and accomodating. The food is superb. The linguine alfredo is authentic, piping hot and delish. My wife had the linguine with bay scallops which she praised to no end. The grilled sanddabs looked very fresh. Unrelatedly, I like to explore old buildings, and, when going to the backroom loo, noted a connecting hallway and a neatly painted stairwell that descends down to a below-street function area that makes one feels that if one explored at the wrong time, one might walk-in on something out of a Scorsese flick, so that was neat, ambience-wise. But seriously, a great place for no-nonsense, delicious, Italian seafood and pasta at a reasonable price. Grazie, Sotto Mare!

The best in North Beach
We love this place.... we have been in the bay area for 20 years and there is no place that we like better. Come in everyday wear, enjoy the seat down bar, tables, downstairs and talk to your neighbor. What a wonderful place for feeling you are in Italy. The serves is great.

Best meal and service available!!
Great local find. Ask for the counter seats for first hand viewing of the meal preparations. Family run and cares about all their customers. Great clam chowder and the seafood linguine is outstanding. Get the pink sauce. There is no question this will be my first stop the next time I'm in town.

Well priced seafood awesomeness
They have the best clam chowder I've had in the Bay Area, 2nd to Marshall's in Tomales Bay. Fish is deliciously simple, pan fried to crispy perfection, and comes with buttery seared brussel sprouts or whatever veggies are in season. Never had the seafood linguini but have seen it and it looks amazing. Often go here just for drinks, oysters, and shrimp louis.
