The little restaurant that could
Tucked in the midst of the ever reviving 24th street in the mission sits the sun rise resturant. a small but comfortable cafe type place, its run by the type of dedicated family/small business owner I love. perhaps better known for its weekend brunches, the sun rise should not be overlooked for other meals. a combined american/good home eatin' offerings with salvadorean favorites, the sun rise is less cultural melting pot than a true bicultural joint. do not miss the pupusas, which, at $1.50 each, are the embodiment of a cheap eat. choose beans, cheese, zucchini, spinach, meat, or a two-fer combo. top with the zingy cabbage slaw that accompanies these soft, plushy disks of tortilla love, add a side dish or two to share with friends (note: plantains are not on the menu but ask for them anyway), add a beer (they just got their liquor license) and you are out maybe $15, including tip. such a deal!
