huge disappointment
After reading all the rave reviews, I expected something much better. The croque monsieur sandwich bore no resemblance to any other one I've ever eaten. Doughy bread, cheese wasn't even melted. Croissants 3 times the normal size and not particularly good. all in all , a substandard experience.

So good I'm moving up from LA
This is simply the best bakery I have ever been to. I highly recommend their bread pudding, made with a different fruit everyday. If I could give a higher rating for the food I would. True the place is always super crowded, but the atmosphere is very friendly and its not difficult to sit and share a table with some strangers. As noted in the title, I'm currently living in Los Angeles... this place is so good that I still felt compelled to write a review. Do yourself a favor and try it, just don't be in a hurry because the line really is pretty long.

Too crowded
The only problem with Tartine is that the food is so good, you have to wait in line forever to eat there and fight yuppies off with a fork to even keep the table you secured after hovering indefinitely yourself. While it is good, it is not good enough to wait in a line that goes out the door, only to be forced to take your goodies home to eat. If they would open a larger space or another site, I'd be a more loyal customer. But I'd rather have a more relaxed experience somewhere I know I'll be able to sit down with friends without getting jostled or having to compete for a table.

Excellent desserts, so-so sandwiches
This place might be considered overpriced but the quality of their bakery products & cakes has no equal in the area. They also bake excellent bread wed-sunday, ready after 5 pm, but you need to hurry b/cause it will all be gone before 8 pm. Their sandwiches are not so good (weird combination of flavors, quite heavy and no veggies included) plus they seem overly expensive at 8 $/slice of bread. Also you need to have patience b/cause at almost any time of the day there's a looong line of people waiting to buy their croissants and sip their cappuccinos at Tartine.

Vies with La Boulangerie but you can sit
Very tasty breakfast place - lovely cafe with outdoor tables, lively, crowded, and some of the best pastries in town - the tarts, croissants, madeleines and financiers are just about as good as the Boulangerie on Pine at Fillmore but here you can sit on a nice corner outside and have coffee.
